[Infographic] Best Practices for Email Subject Lines

[Infographic] Best Practices for Email Subject LinesYour email subject lines determine whether or not your message will be read.
To make sure it does get read, follow these tips when writing your subject:

Be concise

It should take only a quick glance for people to grasp your subject; otherwise, they might ignore your message. Also, a long subject doesn’t get fully displayed in the inbox list, so it fails to make an impact on first read.

Give details

It sounds contradictory, being specific while keeping it concise. But if the 140-word character limit of Twitter is any indication, you can find ways to be clear even with limited space.

Tailor it to fit

A personalized subject grabs people’s attention faster than a generic one, so start by using the recipient’s first name. You don’t have to do this manually; autoresponders and other email marketing tools can automatically pick out first names from subscriber lists.

The Perfect Sales Email Campaign - 315

The Perfect Sales Email Campaign - 315The medium may now be digital, but the principle behind marketing has always been psychological. To attract potential customers, you’ve got to understand how human nature works and use it to your advantage. Here are a couple of techniques you can try in order to create the  perfect sales email campaign.

Courtesy

The double opt-in form asks for confirmation from users first when they subscribe. This eliminates (or at least minimizes) accidental signups; at the same time, it shows people that you’re extending courtesy towards them. It’s a simple gesture, but it builds trust from the start.

Curiosity

People are naturally curious, so make your subject lines enticing enough to grab and sustain attention. If you can evoke positive emotion, so much the better. But keep them short and specific to avoid boring and frustrating your readers. People have grown weary of click bait titles, so it’s better to avoid that style.

How to Interpret 3 Important Email Marketing Stats [Infographic]

How to Interpret 3 Important Email Marketing Stats

Thanks to our friends over at www.SurePayroll.com for this great illustration of important email marketing stats.

Sending out a great email is one thing. But understanding what happens once emails reach (or don’t reach) inboxes is another thing.

My email bounced?!?

Let’s start with the latter scenario: Your carefully crafted email quickly returns. This is a bounce. There are 2 types of bounces. A soft bounce generally tends to be about technical or spam-related issues; there might be a server problem, a recipient’s inbox might be too full, or you’ve tried to send a too-big message.

Soft bounces are different than hard bounces; those types of returns are because you tried to send to an email or server that doesn’t exist.

Once you’ve thought about your bounce rate, you also need to dive into metrics related to your open rate. Of course, how you craft an email affects your open rate, but there are other factors at work, too, including the industry that you’re participating in. Other elements, including the subject line and who the email is “from,” affect the open rate.

You must also analyze your email practices to follow healthy, smart ways to maintain that list. This graphic can help you sort through the complex elements including in analyzing your email marketing.

Some people have a way with words — and you can be one of them. Understanding the human mind is key to writing appealing emails. It’s psychology working for you. Thanks to our friends from Salesforce Marketing Cloud for this great infographic on how to use psychology to make your emails more alluring.

Personalize your Emails

People respond best when they feel special. That’s why referring to someone by their first name after you first meet them is a great way to leave a first impression. For emails, the principle is the same. Tailor your words for each segment you’re targeting to leave a positive initial impact on your readers.

Repetition

People tend to remember something that has been brought to their attention a few times. You don’t want to bombard your readers (otherwise, you’re being spammy), but you want them to remember you — and that’s not going to happen with just one. Send short follow-up messages as needed to ensure that you’re always on their radar.
