July 27 TabSite Fan Page Optimization Webinar Q & A

July_27_webinar_2011.jpg

On July 27, TabSite President Troy Rumfelt and Community Manager, Mike Gingerich, hosted a webinar, “Facebook Fan Page Optimization: Optimize and Socialize your Fan Page”“.  Included was an overview including the following key points:

  • Choose your Fan Page Name wisely!  Don’t add extra words to your name, just use your name.  This is because Facebook Search is a literal search word-for-word and if you add words, users on Facebook have much more trouble finding you via Facebook Search.
  • Create a Vanity URL at www.facebook.com/username.  As soon as you have 25 fans you can do this.  For your username it is fine to add a keyword to your company name if you choose so that this is part of your custom url.  Remember, again, choose carefully because you get one shot at this selection.  We recommend it flows with your branding.  So something like www.Facebook.com/Mycompany-Product1 is perfectly fine and includes your keyword in the url.
  • The Info tab on your fan page is key for getting indexed for keywords.  Fill this out completely and use keywords in it.  This is the most important tab for getting the fan page indexed.
  • Facebook iframe tabs are rendered as iframes on the web and as such they are not always be crawled by search engines.  Search Engine crawling of custom iframe tabs is hit and miss, so don’t fully count on it.  This is an issue, but TabSite has a solution!
  • TabSite reveals MicroSites!  TabSite is set to launch MicroSite’s in beta on Friday of this week.  It allows TabSite users to have a their fan page TabSite and Sub-page content fully indexed on the web as a mini-website, a MicroSite.  No additional cost and full details are in the webinar with more information to come on securing usernames and outlining full functionality.

Below is the Question & Answer transcription along with links to the slides and video.

Q. Is the microsite manager going to be on the same page as the tabsite manager?

A.  Yes, the MicroSite manager is accessible in the TabSite Manager.  In the left navigation we have added a MicroSite manager link.

Q. I’m currently using a different app for my welcome page. How would I switch that over to tabsite?

A.  If you have the code, you can grab the code and with our Gold Plan you can embed the code and save it.  That is an easy way to port over from an other service.  You can also upload the images to the TabSite image tray and rebuild your Tab.

Q. Can you change your MicroSite name in the future?

A.  Yes, you can change your MicroSite name!  Names are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  You can select a name and then change the name at a later time if you wish.  By default, we pull the username you have on your Facebook Fan Page.

Q. Will there be another opportunity to see this webinar in the future?

A. Absolutely!  The webinar is available for replay by going to www.TabSite.com/Webinars

Q. My client spent a fortune on their website, would a MicroSite not devalue the existing website?

A.  Not at all.  A MicroSite is different.  It is your Fan Page Content which is often a simpler and more condensed version of your website.  As well, it helps both your fan page and website by being another source of backlinks to the site.  Also, MicroSite’s are like landing pages, they are used as “linkers” to get you to main content, not as the solo source themselves.  MicroSite’s are “supplements” that help your overall online strategy and which overcome the Facebook iframe indexing barriers.

mari.pngQ. Will you be sending an email out to people who registered for this event today about the Mari event?

A. Absolutely.  We are thrilled to have Mari Smith on board to do a special webinar with us on September 1.  We have information here and we will be sending further e-mail announcements.

Q. Do you have example sites, and case studies of how successful this is?

A.  With MicroSites being a brand new launch, we do not have case studies yet.

Q. So I understand the TabSite MicroSite, basically a MicroSite will be created on your domain which will pull in your FB tabs? Is that correct?

A.  That is correct.  Your TabSite content pushed to the web at a custom username url you choose.  Each MicroSite has SEO tools to help you optimize the page for search indexing.  MicroSite’s also have the  “Like” integrated so a visitor can “Like” your fan page from MicroSite and auto-links back to your fan page.

Q. Is the MicroSite compatible with smartphone browsers?

A.  It is.  It is not a pure mobile site, but it is able to be navigated by smart phones.  Remember that it is your 520 wide fan page content and navigation added to that but it can be seen by browsers.  All functions will work on mobile browsers unless you have embedded some special code in your TabSite such as flash which won’t work on iPhones.

Q. So in facebook the texts in tab and sub-tab are not indexed. Right?

A. Indexed only to a very limited degree because each fan page tab is an iframe.  Search bots often overlook content in iframes.  We have reviewed hundreds of fan page tabs and at best less than half are getting content indexed.

Q. Is this being recorded?

A. Definitely.  See video replay link above.

Q. Does the video widget take amazons3 files?

A.  You can link to any video that is hosted on a webserver.

Q. You mentioned earlier not to use bit.ly for attaching links on FB–could you elaborate?

A.  Studies have shown that people on Facebook do not like the short links where they can’t see the final destination url.  On Facebook research is clear users want to see the url and this makes them more likely to click, share, and Like the post.  Since getting those interactions is important, we recommend staying away from shorteners on Facebook.

Q. What’s the difference between creating a fan page using a FB app and the regular procedure (creating username, then fan page)?

A.  Perhaps there is confusion here.  You still need to create a fan page on Facebook.  You then add a custom app like TabSite to your fan page to extend the capabilities, power, and tools of your fan page.

Q. When will MicroSites be released?

A. MicroSites are live!  They were launched on July 29, 2011.  They are available to all TabSite users.

Q. When will the VideoShow widget be available for Fan Pages?

A.  Hopefully early in August.

Q. Can I create a tab which is seen only on the Microsite and not on the fan page?

A.  Yes, you can.  Simply create tabs and add content to them but do not install the tabs to your fan page.
