Facebook Launches Timeline for Pages – TabSite App Supports Changes

Facebook2.jpgFacebook announced the official launch of Timeline for Pages at the first fMC Facebook marketing conference in New York City on Wednesday, February 29, 2012.

One of the biggest new changes announced is that custom tabs will go from 520 pixels wide to 810 pixels wide.

TabSite’s fan page platform has been modified accordingly and now supports this new size as of March 1, 2012.  Page Admins wanting to create custom tabs at the new 810 px wide size can do so right now with TabSite.

TabSite is thrilled with Facebook’s announcement of Timeline and associated tools!  We believe Timeline is very exciting and offers marketers increased capability to boost their marketing presence on the largest social media platform in the world. Increasing the width makes tab apps closer to the size of a website and allows for more creativity and flexibility in the design process.

Timeline for Pages: 60 Second Overview

Lots of innovation from that creative bunch at Facebook revealed today!

Here’s the skinny on the Facebook announcements:Facebook2.jpg

1. Timeline for Facebook Pages

Facebook’s Team reported:

– “Richest, most remarkable marketing canvas we’ve ever built. Everything you do on Facebook has to start on your page.”

– “While ads are good, stories are better”

Timeline is the launchpad for your Page stories. Your newsfeed becomes more important as Timeline will become the default for all pages.  Final changeover is expected in 30 days for all Pages. What you post and what you share become stories in your newsfeed.

You will be able to “pin” priority stories to your Timeline to be at the top of your Timeline Page.

Custom tabs remain!

Each Facebook Page Tab will now be 810 pixels wide, much wider than the current 520 available now.  Facebook is letting all Page Admins preview the Timeline before publishing and preview the Cover image for each Page.

Fan Page Admins can edit the custom large image for each tab shown in the Timeline.  See details.

Timeline is the default for all Pages so it appears that fan-gating is going away.  Instead use the “Pin” tool for your posts and also key in on graphics for your large tab image.

Facebook announced today a new story type called Offers. Offers allow you to get your promotions in front of users. It will be like “specials” where users can come and with one simple click claim and share the offer!

Additionally, visitors and fans can now message Pages directly when Pages have upgraded to Timeline.  Page Admins will be alerted of Messages and they will be easily visible in the revamped Page manager area.

2. Reach Generator: Making sure your fans see your stories

With Reach Generator Facebook has created a tool to enable stories to get featured.  Facebook noted that  the average user saw 16% of the content available in their Newsfeed per week.  Reach Generator allow you to reach more like 60-85% of your fans on a monthly basis. Stories using Reach Generator will be valuable for that reach and as well because they will create sub stories on top of stories.

Fact from Facebook:  Fans are twice as valuable as viewers from a purchase decision standpoint. Ben and Jerry’s was able to increase ROI by 3x when testing Reach Generator.

3. “Premium on Facebook”

This is a new Facebook ad tool on steroids! It creates the most impactful way to distribute content on Facebook.  You select Premium, Facebook analyzes your fan page user data and delivers the ad in up to 5 key locations that will work best.  See image for locations for distribution.

timeline-20.jpg

In the newsfeed, you’ll see a 5-10x click through rate with promoted newsfeed stories. These premium stories will show up on mobile as well.  Facebook Mobile features are scheduled for rollout later in March as well.

4. More Roles for Page Admins Coming

Facebook also announced that late in March there will be additional roles revealed for Facebook Page Admins.  This is a welcome note for all Page Admins so that interns can have a lesser roll, Community Manager a more primary role and so forth.  Watch for details.

FACEBOOK TIMELINE CONCLUSIONS:

Lots of opportunity with these new Timeline features from Facebook!  Page Admins can create a much rich experience with Timeline on pages.  Stories and communicating in the Newfeed becomes a more critical factor so tools like TabSite’s sister service Plan Your Post will be needed.

In addition, the new Page real estate of 810 pixels coming with Timeline makes fan page tabs much more like websites.  Loads of content and goodies can be placed in this wide area.  This is great news for TabSite as we get ready to launch Contests in March and for all Page Admins wanting to more strategically use Facebook for Marketing.

We’d recommend Page Admins use the Preview options in the Fan Page Admin area to get your Timeline ready but wait a bit until the dust settles and Facebook works out final kinks and bugs.  You can prepare information for your Timeline to showcase past dates and events, figure out what you want to “pin” at the top of your Timeline, prepare your Cover image, and even update the large tab icons with graphics that will grab attention.

TabSite is working to finish the new Timeline 810 pixel width.  Your tabs will work just fine now already if you upgrade to Timeline for your Page.  We’ll announce when we have the 810 wide version ready and we’ll also be adding in the TabSite manager the ability to change the large icon image.

Timeline for Pages Launches

Timeline for Facebook Pages has come as expected today, February 29!

Facebook did pull a fast one and launched it in the wee hours of the morning instead of at their event press conference scheduled for later this morning.

Here’s the basics:

We recommend not upgrading just yet. Let the dust settle a bit.

Your Facebook page tabs from TabSite still work just fine!

They are centered in the page tabs which will be 760 pixels which is wider than the now 520 pixel area.

THE BASICS:

1. Yes, your TabSite tabs still work.

2. Default landing tabs are going away (Timeline will be default)

3. Tab width will be moving to 760 px wide (currently 520px). TabSite will be adjusting to this and announcing date.  UPDATE:  It looks like tab width will be 810px wide.  TabSite is planning accordingly.

UPDATE: Pin your top tabs! – hover, then click the pencil icon to “pin” a specific tab to the top.

4.. You can now message fan pages – there is a Timeline manager area on your Page to access this.

5.. Timeline will automatically come to pages on March 30th.  You can publish earlier if you wish.

6. You can add a Timeline Cover Image NOW if desired.

NOTES: Cover photo can be up to 851px by 315px
but Timeline Cover images may NOT contain the following:
– Price or purchase information, such as “50% off” or “Download it at our website”.
– Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section.
– References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features.
– Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.

7. There is a preview stage where you can see it but the public can’t.!

February 29 Facebook Timeline News!

Facebook2.jpgIt’s leap year and what a better way to commemorate this unique day than with a major leap forward from Facebook, the the biggest social media platform in the world!

February 29 is the day Facebook is set to announce the launching and details of Timeline for Pages.

Business Insider reported in late January that Facebook is in the process of launching Timeline for Brand pages and that an official announcement will be made on February 29th during Facebook’s invitation-only Facebook Marketers Council in New York City.  We’ll be taking in the LiveStream event and you can to, right here.

So what does Timeline mean for your Page and what can you do to prepare?

No one knows exactly what Facebook is going to do regarding Timeline for Pages until there’s an official announcement. However, we can speculate on a number of changes based on the current Timeline for Profiles, and Facebook’s own admission that they want to have some continuity and consistency between Profiles and Pages (see Mashable 09/27/2011).

Large Cover Image

This is the most striking visual detail of Timeline for profiles.  We see no reason that this wouldn’t be central to a Timeline for Pages. Our guess is that this will function just like it does for Profiles, where Page Admins can add/update the prominent image. (See example below of one Timeline cover concept of a fan Page that was developed as an idea and posted on Mashable.)

Custom Tabs

Custom tabs serve as a key piece of the Facebook experience for visitors to fan pages. Companies rely on their custom tabs for encouraging the “Like” of the page, for gathering user data, for running contests and sweepstakes, and much more. It’s doubtful that this will change. Custom tabs are important to users, Page Admins and to Facebook.

Why for Facebook? Custom tabs provide Ad space. Facebook’s income comes largely from Ad revenue.  Will custom tabs change in some other way like size? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

The Wall

Currently the Wall is the central destination and default location set by Facebook for all that have “Liked” a Page. If you compare the present Page Wall to a Profile Timeline, the Wall fails! It’s largely text-based, and much less visually stimulating.

My guess is that the Wall (and perhaps the Info tab) will be replaced with the Timeline. Once a visitor has “Liked” the Page, the default destination will be the Timeline that they return to upon subsequent visits.

What About Tab Navigation when Timeline comes?

If the Wall transforms into the Timeline for Pages, obviously the current left navigation for custom tabs will be gone. My speculation, and it’s just speculation, is that just like on the Profile Timeline where there are scrollable boxes right beneath the Cover image for “Likes,” “Friends,” “Photos,” etc., there will now be boxes for tabs showing “Fans,” “Map,” and custom tabs. As well, tabs may appear as “boxes” in the Timeline where it pulls in the tab name, possibly an image (replacing custom icon currently used?), and potentially pulling text from the tab itself.

Obviously this may mean changes and new possibilities for custom tabs. Developers like our team at TabSite are poised and ready to respond and take advantage of the new features that may be added.

So, will custom tabs remain after Timeline launches? I think yes. Will users have to rework them? Hard to say, other than perhaps the custom icons for tabs go away and a new size image would be available. Again, just speculation, but this would seem to flow with Facebook’s goal of consistency and a “clean” look similar to Timeline for Profiles.

So what can be done to prepare?

There are a number of things Page Admins can do to prepare for Timeline:

  1. Prepare a Timeline – What events and dates are significant to your company? Create a written report with images that you will want to use for those special dates in your company history.
  2. Prepare a Timeline Cover Image – You’ll be ready to showcase your brand image and upload it.
  3. Prepare Communication – You can begin preparing blog or news communication for your fans/visitors letting them know you are staying current with Facebook’s potential changes and plan to be ready to adjust in order to create a great environment for them.
  4. Keep in touch with us – We”ll be giving out information as we have it on how you can prepare and what shifts you’ll need to make. Watch our fan page and blog.

One thing you can always expect from Facebook: innovation. As a social platform, Facebook will continue to evolve and change, just as your social relationships are fluid and ever-evolving. Facebook wants to make the world a more connected place. Timeline for Pages is just a next step in this process!
